FRESHtival!, an event sponsored by the Calhoun County Farmer's Market, drew community and regional folks this weekend, featuring everything from fresh produce and plants to wild mushroom and insect displays .
One of a dozen activities was a Sunflower Growing Contest for children, the first place winner received a $50 prize, with the Jett family rising to the top.
Eight-year-old Kaity Jett won the 1st place $50 prize
Eleven-year-old Jake Jett won 2nd place
Four-year-old Jaron Jett won 3rd place
The sunflower goes back to at least 2,600 years BC, with indigenous American peoples using the plant as the symbol of their solar deity.
In modern times, the use of sunflower seeds have turned practical.
