A reenactment of the "Battle of Sycamore" recreated by Calhoun County's own 19th Regiment of the Virginia Cavalry Company A - "The Moccasin Rangers" will be part of the 2nd Annual Fun Festival at Calhoun County Park today and Sunday.
The event will feature music, food and fun for the entire family.
The Calhoun Historical Society will be giving tours of Heritage Village. There will be horse and tractor drawn hayrides to and from Heritage Village from the Herbert C. Smith Community Building.
The event will include period-correct Civil War encampments, reenactments, corn-hole competition, golf-drive competition, and an open-air flea market.
Nickel Dime Farm, and members of the Appalachian Goat Association, will have a goat petting zoo and milking exhibit as well as natural products made from goats milk.
There will be a dunking booth with local residents serving as the "Dunkees".
Plenty of food will be available all weekend long with BBQ Beef sandwiches, quartered chickens, baked beans, baked potatoes with all the fixins', snacks, munchies, and cold drinks.
Saturday Schedule:
10:30 a.m. - Long-Drive Contest, no entry fee. Bring your own clubs.
Patty Cooper performs as Belle Boyd
12-noon - Civil War skits at Heritage Village, Patty Cooper performs in character as "Belle Boyd" schoolmarm and American Civil War spy.
When Union troops invaded Martinsburg during the Civil War the 17-year-old Belle shot and killed a Union soldier who had invaded her family home. She was acquitted on self-defense and used her charm to gain the confidence of federal troops.
Boyd continued to hone her spy skills of disguise, code, observation, and passing messages to Confederate officers. After smuggling a message to England in 1864 she was exiled from the country. After the war she returned to the U.S. and toured the country telling of her exploits
12:30 p.m. - Basketball skills for students - dribbling, shooting & combinations.
1:00 p.m. - Troops prepare for battle. Come and watch as the North and South prepare to face off.
2:00 p.m. - The Battle of Sycamore begins.
4-7:00 p.m. - Bluegrass featuring musicians from the West Virginia Bluegrass Alliance.
4:00 p.m. - Corn Hole Tournaments - trophies for the winners and two separate corn hole sets, one for serious players and one for the kids.
6:00 p.m. - Reenactors' dinner upstairs in the Herbert C. Smith Community building.
Sunday Schedule:
8:00 a.m. - Biscuits & Gravy Breakfast at the Herbert C. Smith Community Building - All are welcome.
8:00 a.m. - 3D Archery Shoot - Sponsored by Parson's One-Stop. Gear up and get ready for bow season the shoot will start at 8 a.m. and run until it's over, or until the reenactment starts at 2 p.m. After the reenactment, the shooting will resume. Entry fee is $7 per person, payable at the event. There will be thirty 3-D animal targets and a 45-yard maximum bow hunter setup. What a great way to tune up your technique before bow season. Professionals
will be on-hand for any questions you may have.
10-1:00 p.m. - Northern and Southern Encampments open to civilian tours.
11:00 a.m. - Period Church service in a Civil War tent.
1:00 p.m. - Troops prepare for battle.
2:00 p.m. - The Battle of Sycamore begins.
3:30 p.m. to sundown - Bluegrass jam sessions - All amateur musicians welcome to show up and jump in whenever you feel like it.
4:00 p.m. - Rifle Raffle - The winning ticket for a Smith & Wesson 30.06 w/scope and hard case will be drawn. Tickets available for purchase up until drawing time. Need not be present to win.
