CALHOUN SCHOOL'S LATEST OEPA AUDIT SHOWS MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS

(08/13/2009)
A 2007 and 2008 audit done by the State Department of Education (OEPA) revealed serious performance problems at Calhoun Middle-High School.

County school board members heard the good news Monday evening.

A return visit to the school in May, 2009 by an audit team is reportedly showing major improvements at the school.

"It is very complimentary of the school and our efforts to improve the situation that existed in the 2007 audit," said Superintendent Roger Propst.

School board members praised principal Karen Kirby, the school's staff and county administrators for their exemplary efforts to turn the school around.

Details of the latest report will be released shortly.

The Calhoun school system will be joining litigation against the State of WV related to seeking relief over county school boards being held accountable for debt incurred by the state being placed on their financial statements (OPEB).

Board president Cynthia Dale asked Principal Karen Kirby, "What is being done regarding the monitoring of locker rooms at CMHS?" referring to problems with some members of athletic teams in the past.

Mrs. Kirby replied, "The parents and students were given a copy of the Harassment Policy on the first day of athletic activities and required to return the form the second day of practice in order to participate."

"My staff has made repeated efforts to visit the areas indicated to assure the coaching staff are monitoring students in the locker rooms," Kirby said.

A report was given regarding upgrades being made to the Pleasant Hill Elementary School.
