The Calhoun County Laubach Literacy Council
has received a $3,000 grant from the Benedum
Foundation to support the formation of a
volunteer literacy tutor group. Laubach Literacy
Action is the oldest and largest volunteer
literacy provider in the world, representing over
101,000 volunteers from across the world and
providing over six million hours of assistance to
new readers.
West Virginia Laubach Literacy, a state-wide
affiliate of LLA, was founded to provide free,
confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults.
Last year, local programs served over 1,800 adult
learners in West Virginia. The certified
volunteer tutors help people to increase their
reading, writing, and math skills, employability
skills, and parenting skills.
Volunteer tutors will receive twelve hours'
worth of training, to be held Saturday, April 6th
and Saturday, April 13th at the Gilmer County ABE
classroom site in Sand Fork, Gilmer County. Upon
completion of the training, volunteers will be
certified Laubach Literacy Tutors and will be
available to assist new readers throughout
Calhoun County. The Calhoun County Public
Library and the Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center are
among the potential sites for student/tutor
meetings.
Individuals, civic organizations,
businesses,churches, and other groups are
encouraged to become a part of this international
literacy movement. Helping a new reader is a
rewarding experience that will benefit both
student and tutor, as well as improve Calhoun
County's quality of life.
Interested parties should contact Phyllis
Whipkey at the Calhoun County Library, 354-6300
or Shelly Allen at the Calhoun-Gilmer Career
Center, 354-6151.
