Seventy-nine campers opened the 2009 Calhoun County 4-H camp on June 7 at the Gilmer County Recreation Center in Glenville. "4-H The most Important Part of the Day" was the theme for the annual camp that lasted through Friday June 12. Campers enjoyed a fun filled week of classes, assemblies, recreation, swimming, tribal meetings and council circle.
Following registration on Sunday, the campers met in opening assembly to review camp rules and procedures. Campers were divided into four tribes with tribal leaders announced at council circle on Sunday evening. Cherokee Chief Jordan Mace; Sagamores Alex McCumbers, and Ryan Swearengin. Delaware Chief Ashley Conley; Sagamores Jessica Cosgrove and Angel Samples. Mingo Chief Jessica Wood; Sagamores Ray Phillips and Caitlin Roberts. Seneca Chief Ashley Houchin; Sagamores Samantha Wilson and Jacob Jett.
Sunday afternoon activities included tribal meetings, cabin meetings, dinner, recreation, meditations, council circle, and snack time. The daily schedule Monday through Friday began with flag raising at 7:20 a.m. each morning. Following breakfast, campers participated in cabin clean up and attended three classes or crafts of their choosing. The daily schedule also included morning assembly, lunch, afternoon assembly, tribal meetings, free time which most of the campers used to go swimming, flag lowering, dinner, recreation, meditations, council circle, snack and lights out in the cabins by 11:00 p.m.

Afternoon assemblies included on Monday a visit from a WV National Guard Helicopter which also included a presentation from their drug prevention team and an obstacle course; Tuesday - the WVU Mountaineer; Wednesday - Susan Sullivan, from WVBOY; Thursday was a presentation by local goat farmers on showing goats as agriculture projects; and Friday was the traditional camp slide show of the week's events. Morning assemblies included bed check, honor check and one of the morning assemblies concluded with a citizenship ceremony for each camper that had reached or would reach their 18th birthday prior to next year's camp.
Special events during the week included Tuesday's karaoke with Ed Messenger, Wednesday's Swim Meet, and the Thursday's camp dance with DJ Shelley Goad.
Classes and craft offerings included country crafts, ceramics, crackle painted signs, fishing, newspaper, rockets, leather crafts, table tennis, bee keeping, scrapbooking, cross stitch name tag, recreation, 1st year camper, outdoor adventure, swimming, gardening, fun with foods, air rifle and charting.

On Friday evening the traditional pin wearer's service was held. Ashley Houchin and Jessica Wood successfully completed the 4-H charting program and received their charting pins.

Tribal Loyalty is the first of the felt awards given at 4-H Camp. Nominated by the Chiefs and Sags, this award is given one time to campers for outstanding service to their tribe.
It was presented this year to: Cherokee: Alex McCumbers and Riley Cain;Delaware: Johnathan Taylor, Hannah Burris, Delaney Cunningham; Mingo: Caitlin Roberts, Baylee Swisher; Seneca: Nate Hipp, Conner Ritchie, Tyler Ellison.
Outstanding Brave Awards are presented to campers who have already received a Tribal Loyalty Award. It is given to campers that demonstrate leadership and teamwork with their tribe and camp. This award includes a partial scholarship to return to county camp.
It was presented to: Zac Stump, Casey Ritchie, Cole Ritchie.
The Green and White Award is the second of the felt awards presented to older campers for outstanding camp leadership usually presented to campers who have already earned Tribal Loyalty. It was presented to Ryan Swearengin, Jessica Wood, Jordan Mace.
The Blue and Gold Award is presented for outstanding camp and total county 4-H leadership participation. It is presented to campers who have already received both tribal loyalty and green and white felt awards. It was presented to: Samantha Wilson, Jessica Cosgrove, Ashley Houchin.
The Homer and Icy Jones Memorial Scholarship is given in honor of Mr.and Mrs. Jones and there support of young people. This award is given to campers for outstanding work in camp. It is a $15.00 scholarship to attend county 4-H camp next year and was presented to Nate Hipp, Hannah Burris, Chris Goad.
The Deanna Higgs Memorial Scholarship is a $15.00 to attend county 4-H camp next year. Mrs. Higgs was a 4-H leader in Calhoun and her children have all formerly attended Calhoun County 4-H Camp. This award is given to recognize a camper for outstanding work in camp and it was presented Jake Jett and Taylor Garrett.
The Jim and Brenda Jones Scholarship to attend 4-H camp next year is given by the Jones who were very active in 4-H in Calhoun County. It is given to recognize outstanding camp participation and was presented to Alex McCumbers and Nathan Cosgrove.
The Mary Helen Hartshorn Memorial Scholarship is a $50.00 scholarship to attend county 4-H camp next year. Endowed by camp program director Kelley Houchin in honor of her mother. Mary Helen was a former member, leader, and life long 4-H supporter. It was presented for outstanding camp participation to: Ryan Swearengin, Jessica Wood, and Jordan Mace.
Jim Weaver Memorial Scholarship is $20.00 to attend 4-H camp next year . The scholarship is endowed by the Weaver Family in honor of Jim who was active in Calhoun County 4-H. It was presented for outstanding camp leadership to: Ashley Houchin, Jessica Cosgrove, and Samantha Wilson.
Jim Weaver Memorial Scholarship to attend Alpha I is endowed by the Weaver Family to send county members to state camp. It was presented to: Jessica Wood and Dylan DeWeese.
The Randall Jones Memorial Scholarship is presented in memory of Randall Jones.
Randall Jones was a member of the 4-H Hall of Fame and was a 4-H All Star. He was also leader of the Mt. Zion Cardinals 4-H Club, 4-H assistant Teen Leader Advisor, 4-H Camp Counselor, and a county and state 4-H Shooting Sports Shotgun Instructor. He was the father of 4-H'er Shannon Jones Johnson and the husband of Extension agent, Sue Jones. It was presented for outstanding camp leadership to Jessica Cosgrove.
During the week, the tribes participate in tribal competitions to earn points for their tribes. These competitions include honor check, bed check, meal line ups and other activities. The tribal point competition winner is announced at the conclusion of council circle. This year the Seneca Tribe placed first, followed by the Cherokee Tribe, Mingo Tribe and Delaware Tribe.
The highest individual awards presented at the conclusion of council circle are the H Awards and the Spirit of Camp Awards. These awards are given to the campers that embody the characteristics of each H during the week of camp. This year the awards were presented to:
Head H: Ashley Houchin;
Heart H: Samantha Wilson;
Hand H: Jessica Wood;
Health H: Jordan Mace;
Spirit of 2009 4-H Camp: Jessica Cosgrove.
