The first ever Women in Agriculture Day in this area was held Monday, June 15 at the Heritage Park Community Building in Spencer.

Over 60 women from Roane and the surrounding counties of Calhoun, Clay, Jackson and Wirt gathered to learn about opportunities in agriculture and discuss issues important to women involved in agriculture.

The event was sponsored by the USDA's Farm Service Agency and the West Virginia University Extension Service.

Event organizers developed the event around a gardening theme. After learning about local opportunities through the USDA Farm Service Agency's programs and loans, the West Virginia Farm Bureau, and the WVU Extension Service, participants discussed gardening techniques with special guest WSAZ gardening expert, John Marra, food preservation safety and canning techniques with WVU-Jackson County Extension Agent Gina Taylor and healthy garden produce preparation with WVU-Calhoun/Roane Extension Agent Brandy Brabham.

Participants were also able to sample food prepared during a cooking demonstration. A small reception was provided during the event and door prizes, donated by local businesses, were given out throughout the event. Participants were provided with packets of related information and recipes to take home at the conclusion of the event.

Participants were very complimentary of the event and organizers plan to conduct a similar event next year. For more information about the programs, organizations, or loans discussed during the event, individuals can contact the WVU Extension Office at 304-927-0975 or the USDA FSA office at 304-927-1022, ext 2.
