Undergrad Day activities were held June 4 at the Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center, with an awards program for morning and afternoon Career Center students. After the presentation of awards, staff and students enjoyed a cookout with fun activities to celebrate the end of a successful year.
Mr. David White, counselor and National Technical Honor Society [NTHS] advisor, presented the new inductees with a certificate, letter of recommendation and NTHS pin. The new members of the NTHS were: Talia Brady, Ryan Ellison, Allen Gregory, Erica King, Anthony Richards, Clover Wanstreet and Andrew Wilson.

Mr. John Bennett, director of the Career Center, presented Career Readiness Certificates. This system certifies the entry level workforce has the basic skills necessary for success in typical jobs and has become popular nationwide. Governor Joe Manchin's office is now awarding such certificates based on ACT WorkKeys test scores in reading for information, locating information and applied mathematics. Tests are scored on a scale of one through seven, seven being the highest score.
A bronze certificate is awarded to those who score threes or above on the assessments. Students receiving a bronze Career Readiness Certificate were, Brian Blosser, Russell Butler, Travis Carte, Jarrod Claypool, Justin Gerwig, Jesse McCullough, Alexander McCumbers, Joshua Miller, Jodi Pettit, Samantha Poulin, Brandon Reed, George Short, Rickey Swearengin, Matthew Talbert, Taylor Welch and Justin Wood.
Silver Career Readiness Certificates are awarded to those who score fours and above on the ACT WorkKeys. Students receiving a silver certificate were, Brittany Blake, Cody Blankenship, Danielle Brunecz, Talia Brady, Joshua Burton, Stephanie Dennison, Eli Dye, Ryan Ellison, Allen Gregory, Nicholas Jones, Cody McCoy, Michael Moss, Anthony Richards, Brittney Robinson, Cody Settle, Sarah Simmons, Casey Small, Nathan Summers, Amber Wagoner and Lorraine Wright.
A gold certificate is awarded to those who score fives and above on the tests and certifies these people possess core employability skills for approximately 90% of the profiled jobs. No undergraduate students receive a Gold Career Readiness Certificate.

Certificates and $20 checks were presented to those students with faithful attendance missing five or less days. Students with faithful attendance were Brittany Blake, Cody Blankenship, Ryan Ellison, Allen Gregory, Nicholas Jones, Michael Moss, Jodi Pettit, Anthony Richards, Sarah Simmons, Kasey Singleton, Drew Williams and Andrew Wilson. A certificate, medallion and check for $200 was presented to Talia Brady for perfect attendance for the 2008-2009 school year.
Mr. Zane Gherke, Networking Technology instructor recognized those undergraduate students participating in the West Virginia SkillsUSA competition in March. A medallion and lanyard were given to Brian Howes in the ProStart Culinary Arts program.
Mr. Bennett presented a certificate and medallion to Talia Brady-Health Occupations, Ryan Ellison-Environmental Technology, Clover Wanstreet-Criminal Justice and Andrew Wilson-Business Education who were recognized with the Outstanding Student Award. These students have faithful attendance and maintained at least a 93% grade average, displayed acceptable attitudes in all phases of lab participation. They participated in all assigned classroom work and actively participated in club activities. Only one student is recognized per program area.
A special thanks goes to the Undergrad Day committee chaired by Mrs. Karen Blankenship for a job well done.
