The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department says the flu virus can spread very easily from person to person when an infected individual coughs or sneezes in the air then the virus will be carried to a susceptible individual who is near or within 6 feet of that infected person.

You may also get infected if you touch surfaces that are contaminated with the virus and then touch your nose, mouth, or eyes.

Here is what you should know about how to protect yourself and your family from the new strain of influenza:

1) Wash your hands frequently throughout the day. This is crucial in all disease prevention. Be sure to use warm to hot water and continue washing for 30 seconds.

2) Wash your hands after coughing or sneezing. You may also use alcohol-based hand cleaners. Always remind children to do the same.

3) Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue when you cough or sneeze. Discard the tissue in the trash after using it. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.

4) Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because germs can easily enter your body through these areas.

5) Maintain cleaning of the most commonly used surfaces, such as tables, knobs, phones etc.

6) Be vigilant. Try to identify early flu-like symptoms as soon as possible.

7) If you have flu like symptoms please stay home and check with your doctor immediately. Please follow your doctor's instructions regarding treatment and returning to work.

8) Do not send your child to school if he/she is sick or has flu-like symptoms. Have your child seen by a doctor immediately.

9) Swine flue symptoms are similar to that of regular flu and may include fever, headache, sore throat, cough, sneezing, body aches, and difficulty breathing. Occasionally, patients may have diarrhea and vomiting.

10) Keep your distance, at least 6 feet, from anyone who displays flu-like illness.
