Rader Hardman, 97, of Route 1, Reedy, WV, died January 23, 2002, at
Eldercare of West Virginia in Ripley.
He was born Oct. 27, 1904, in Richardson, Calhoun County, the son of Johnny
M. and Electa Scott Hardman. Mr. Hardman graduated from Spencer High
School with the class of 1925, completed the Spencer Normal School and
attended New River State College at Montgomery, WV. He held a lifetime
teaching certificate in West Virginia. He was a farmer and taught school for 23
years in one-room schools in Roane County. He also worked for the Agriculture
Stabilization Service. He was a musician, having played in his high school
orchestra and with the Rotary Band of Spencer.
He was a member of Peniel United Methodist Church, where he was a member
of the Administrative Board, the Board of Trustees and a Sunday school teacher
for many years.
He is survived by one daughter, Janet Lee Bryant of Ripley; two sons, the Rev.
Dr. John D. and George E., both of Peniel; 10 grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.
He addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel and
Ruby Claire; his wife of more than 50 years, Elsie Elizabeth Gandee Hardman;
and two children, Betty Jean and Charles Conn.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home of
Spencer. Rev. Eldon Shingleton and the Rev. Jerry Eaton will officiate. Visitation
is from 6-9 p.m. Saturday with the family at the funeral home. Burial will be in
the Spencer Memorial Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be held
at the Peniel United Methodist Church following the funeral service.
