CALHOUN WORKERS NOT CALLED BACK FOLLOWING WINTER LAY-OFFS

(04/20/2009)
Unemployment rose in 35 West Virginia counties in March, with Calhoun leading the pack.

Unemployment stats are based on workers currently receiving unemployment benefits.

Calhoun's numbers reflect a large number of oil and gas field and construction workers who have not been called back after the winter lay-off.

The largest increase occurred in Jackson County, where 650 workers lost their jobs when Century Aluminum closed.

Calhoun County had the highest unemployment rate in March with 14.3 percent. Monongalia County's 4 percent rate was the lowest.
