Glenville, WV - Alumni Day at GSC is scheduled for April 25th. All alumni and friends of the college are invited to attend. Those coming back to Glenville the evening before and those living within driving distance to campus may want to take advantage of the GSC chapter of MENC's (Music Educators National Conference) annual spaghetti fundraiser on the lawn of the Fine Arts Center from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24th. Then at 7:00 p.m. that evening, everyone will have an opportunity to choose between attending GSC's Spring Band Concert, under the direction of Professor Lloyd Bone, in the Fine Arts Center Auditorium and attending GSC's Theater performance, As You Like It, directed by Professor Dennis Wemm, in the President's Auditorium of the Harry B. Heflin Administration Building. Both events promise to be special performances and equally entertaining.
On Saturday, several activities have been scheduled for throughout the day, beginning with a golf tournament that morning and culminating with the popular evening alumni banquet. The morning golf tournament is being held as a fundraiser for the GSC Men's Basketball team. To register for the golf tournament, please contact head coach Dwaine Osborne at (304) 462-7361, ext 7228.
All activities on Saturday promise to be wonderful opportunities for everyone to socialize, reminisce, and re-establish contact with fellow alums that they haven't seen in a while. The Alumni Center, open from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., will be headquarters for the day's activities with registration (tickets, name tags, etc.) and social time for everyone throughout the day.
The College Bookstore will be open from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. for everyone to have an opportunity to find that special GSC souvenir and the Robert F. Kidd Library will be open during these hours as well. Everyone will want to allow time to visit GSC's Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Center at some point during the afternoon. The gallery, open from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., will feature paintings by former GSC Pioneer, former GSC Art Professor, and Professor Emeritus James W. "Jim" Rogers '63. Mr. Rogers will be available to meet guests from 2:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m. that afternoon in the gallery.
Visitors to campus are invited to attend GSC student Lori Ware's senior recital at 3:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
The Alumni Association's special guests during an afternoon reception, from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., in the pre-function area of the Alan B. Mollohan Campus and Community Center, will be graduates from this year's 1984 honor class (25 years) and recognition classes of 1942, 1955, 1963, 1971, 1981, 1982, and 1988. Everyone is invited to attend and visit with members of these classes.
A special presentation by Mr. Lacy Jones to the Alumni Center (i.e. Faculty Wives' friendship or album quilt that was presented to his father-in-law and mother-in-law, former president Dr. D. Banks Wilburn and Mrs. Vivian Wilburn, when they retired from GSC in 1977) will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the pre-function area of the Mollohan Center.
The annual meet and greet social time for banquet attendees will be held in the pre-function area of the Mollohan Center from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. followed by the alumni banquet at 6:00 p.m. in the ballroom. The evening's spotlight at the banquet will be on the Alumni Association's guests of honor: Alumnus of the Year, Edward E. Evans '82; Alumni Service Award Recipient, Professor Emeritus James W. "Jim" Rogers '63; Alumni Achievement Award Recipient, Harry M. Smith '55; Community Service Award Recipient, Buddy M. Griffin '71; Outstanding Teacher Award Recipient, James E. Giles '81; Outstanding Young Alumni Award Recipients Dr. Debra S. Foust Burns '87 and Robert J. "Bob" Burns '88. The spotlight will also be upon the family of Jack V. Stalnaker '42 and upon a colleague of Professor Emeritus Dr. Espy W. Miller who will be accepting Dr. Miller's recognition on his behalf as these two gentlemen are honored posthumously for their many years of dedicated service to Glenville State College and to the Alumni Association.
Recognition will also be given at the banquet to members of the honor class (1984) who have registered with the Alumni Office prior to the evening's banquet and to outstanding GSC students who will receive GSC Foundation Academic Awards at the banquet. These academic awards are presented each year on the recommendations of faculty members from various departments with funds for these awards provided by alumni, faculty, and friends of Glenville State College.
