GIANT ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION PROJECT DELAYED ANOTHER YEAR

(04/16/2009)
A mega-electric transmission project with a line that crosses much of central WV, including Calhoun, is being delayed by one year.

The projected completion date of a high-voltage West Virginia-to-Maryland power transmission line is being pushed back a year to 2014.

The line is widely opposed by several WV counties and a number of citizen groups who contend the cost of the project will be cost-shifted to West Virginia users.

Company spokesman Ray Dotter says the line isn't needed as soon because the recession has kept down demand for electricity.

The company still considers the power line critical to avoiding significant overloads in the region.

The two power companies planning the 280-mile line said yesterday the change reflects a new analysis by regional grid operator PJM Interconnection.

Allegheny and AEP say they plan to file project applications with state regulators by June.
