VOLUNTEER FIREMEN'S PENSION PLAN APPEARS DEAD

(04/07/2009)
A legislature effort to shore up dwindling volunteerism in WV's volunteer fire departments, appears dead.

The volunteer firemen pension plan has been linked to other measures which would have shored up police and paid firemen's pension plans in WV cities.

Senator Bob Plymale, D-Wayne, authored a successful amendment that would allow the state's larger cities to closeout their financially troubled plans and put any new participants in the state Public Employee Retirement System.

The original House bill included $9 million in state funding to help the cities along with $6 million to reward years of service by volunteer firefighters.

The Senate committee removed the money from the bill Monday.
