CALHOUN-GILMER HAS STATE WINNERS IN SKILLS-USA COMPETITION

The Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center SkillsUSA club sent twelve members to the Academy of Careers and Technology in Beckley, WV for the annual West Virginia SkillsUSA competitions on On March 27 and 28. Over 500 students competed in 36 different contests during the two-day event.

Students attending the competition were Weston Hershey, Brian White, Sharlean King, Brandon Nelson, Stephanie Wood, Derek Singleton, Daniel Husk, Brian Howes, Stanley McLaughlin, Brittany Delaney, Autumn Bloom and Keith Burgess.

Brittany DeLaney, a student in the ProStart program received a Bronze Medal for placing third in the Prepared Speech Leadership contest. According to her instructor, Annette Benson, "I was particularly impressed with the success of Brittany. She had just the right combination of skill, determination, and talent. It showed in her achievement. I am proud of the work that all my students put into the competition".

Weston Hershey, a student in the Building Construction program received a Bronze Medal for placing third in the Carpentry Skills contest. According to his instructor, Roger Sweppenhiser, "Weston has shown remarkable motivation and is an inspiration to the class".

Brandon Nelson, a student in the Networking Technologies program received a Gold Medal for placing first in the Technical Computer Applications contest. As a 1st place winner, Brandon will be accompanying the rest of the state's 1st place winners to Kansas City, Missouri for the National SkillsUSA competition in June.

Nelson's instructor, Zane Gherke, said, "Brandon worked hard preparing for the competition. To be able to represent not only the career center and Calhoun and Gilmer Counties, but the State of West Virginia is a great honor."

The cost to send Brandon to the national competition will be approximately $600. Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center is accepting donations to help with the expenditure of the trip. Anyone wishing to help Brandon may call the Career Center at 304-354-6151.
