RECESSION WATCH: Sabic Eliminates 48 Wood County Jobs

(03/25/2009)
48 WOOD WORKERS UNEMPLOYED - Another round of layoffs is leaving 48 Wood County workers out of a job.

Sabic Innovative Plastics announced it was cutting the positions from its Washington plant.

According to company spokesman Sheila Naab the cuts are part of the company's "global restructuring."

The 48 positions lost at the plant will come from maintenance, material handling, and administration.

Employees will receive severance packages.

Sabic eliminated 14 positions at the plant late last year.

Sabic bought the plant in September 2007 from General Electric Plastics.

CALHOUN TOPS LIST - Workforce West Virginia says that Calhoun County had the highest jobless rate with 13.3 percent. That's based on workers currently receiving unemployment benefits.

The Calhoun numbers likely reflect a large number of workers that have not been called back from the winter lay-off, drilling, pipeline and construction jobs.
