James W. "Jim" Gill, 49, of Prunty Road, Smithville, W.Va., went home to be with our Lord and Savior following a year-long battle with cancer on Saturday, March 21, 2009, surrounded by his family at his residence.
Jim was born on April 9, 1959, at New Martinsville, Wetzel County, W.Va., the son of the late James J. "Junior" and Leona Mathess Gill. He was a graduate of Harrisville High School with the class of 1977 and was most recently employed in the oil and gas industry as a well tender by Dorward Energy Corporation.
He was a former fire chief and member of the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was a member of the Upper Steer Run Baptist Church in Gilmer County, W.Va., and attended the Horn Creek Baptist Church at Cox's Mills, W.Va. He was a very devoted Christian, husband and father.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Nelda Alltop Gill; daughter and son-in-law, Jodi and Douglas Rowe; daughter, Kayla Gill of Smithville, W.Va.; brothers and sisters, Albert of Sistersville, W.Va., David and Raymond of Atlanta, Ga., James of Saberton, W.Va., Sharon of Harrisville, W.Va., June of Friendly, W.Va., Cindy of Grafton, W.Va., Barbara of Fairmont, W.Va., Dottie of Pennsylvania and Annette of Smithville; and granddaughter, Brylee Grace Rowe.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Helen.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with Pastor Joe Sealey and Elder Larry Fisher officiating. Interment will be at the Gill Family Cemetery on Prunty Road near Smithville, W.Va. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
