State Policemen Sgt. John Bonazzo is currently being investigated for a "target list"
against eleven Braxton County citizens, including some juveniles. The internal affairs
arm of the West Virginia State Police in Charleston is investigating, according to
Captain B. D. Gore, who said he takes this type of thing seriously.
Sgt. Bonazzo, who was apparently angered by comments made on a web site about
sexual impropriety by a state policemen, contacted other police agencies giving
them a list of "people who do not need to be given a break if you stop them."
In his memo, Bonazzo said he has given Howard Carpenter, Sheriff of Braxton County,
copies of the material "if you would like to read it." Sheriff Carpenter has been asked
to disclose material provided to him by Sgt. Bonazzo.
The Braxton citizen's list, including two youth who are children of a Braxton
magistrate, are listed numerically one to eleven on the "target list," which The Herald
decided not to publish. At least one other person on the list is a juvenile.
Bonazzo's memo specifically says "The following is a list of individuals spreading
defaming rumors about members of the West Virginia State Police, Gassaway Police
Department and the Braxton Sheriff's Department. For your information these people
do not need to be given a break if you stop them. They have also started a web site
and put many of these rumors on the internet. I have given the Sheriff copies if you
want to read it."...The names are then listed.
One of the people, who asked not to be identified, told The Hur Herald the web-site
was removed after Sgt. Bonazzo complained, although they stated numerous other
issues are connected to problems with the State Police in Braxton County.
