For the last two and one-half quarters of the basketball game Calhoun out scored Parkersburg Catholic. Unfortunately for the Red Devils for the first quarter and a half the Crusaders held them scoreless.
And that 21-point hole proved to be too much as LKC champion PCHS scored a 53-36 victory over the Red Devils.
Calhoun played solid defense early in the game but by the time that Zach Moore canned a three point goal -- his basket made it 21-3 at the 3:23 mark of the second quarter -- the outcome for all intents and purposes was already decided.
The Crusaders took a 24-5 halftime lead only to see Calhoun battle back after intermission and on a couple of occasions cut the lead to 13 points before the much larger Crusaders were able to shove the lead back out to the final 17-point margin.
Calhoun was bothered all night long by the Crusaders' two big men as 6-8 Dylan Reifstecker and 6-7 Nick Harris combined for 11 blocked shots.
Despite the huge height advantage Calhoun held its own on the boards with the Crusaders and managed to keep the two big guys to a combined 12 points and eight rebounds.
Parkersburg Catholic, 16-6, was led by Cole Cwynar with 13 and John Padden with 12.
Calhoun, 4-17, was led by Moore with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Justin Gerwig chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.
Tyler Bennett played an excellent game off the bench with seven points, four steals, two rebounds and two assists. Chucky Kendall and Cai Clothier added four points each while Daniel Sims had three. Kyle Keesler, Greg Myers, Harold McCumbers and Anthony Richards all played but did not score.
The Crusaders won the junior varsity game by a 51-28 count as Zack Romine had 21 and Daniel Collie 10.
Brandon Sampson led Calhoun with 10 points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists. Sims added four, Noah "Mad Dog" Sweeney 3, Stewart Fitzwater, "Double Oh Joe" Overbaugh, Quentin "Q Dawg" Murphy, Richards and Bennett all had two.
Calhoun returns to action tonight when it plays host to Wahama in a double header. It is the last regular season game of the year.
The Red Devils open tournament play Saturday night at Williamstown.
