Rent-A-Center and a large number of plaintiffs have settled a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of violating West Virginia consumer protection law.
Attorneys announced the settlement Tuesday, with a federal judge approving the settlement, About 61,000 customers have been notified.
Rent-A-Center's target low-income families or families that have poor credit, renting-to-own household appliances, furniture and electronics at a higher-than-average interest rate.
The lawsuit said that Rent-A-Center's prices exceeded those permitted by West Virginia statue, the company deny the allegations.
With the settlement, Rent-A-Center will refund a percentage of the amounts paid by eligible customers who submit paperwork to a third-party administrator.
Rent-A-Center also agreed to reduce the number of payments needed to obtain ownership for all active rental agreements in the state as of September 8.
