CHANGE FOR OPENING DAY OF DEER SEASON BEING DISCUSSED

(02/16/2009)
The first day of deer season is a big deal in West Virginia.

Last week at the State Capitol there was an idea floating around to change the opening day of gun season.

Gov. Joe Manchin said such change would primarily be focused on keeping kids in school.

Of course, in some counties, school systems gave up years ago and canceled school for the Thanksgiving week.

Though Manchin said he is opposed to Sunday hunting, he may be open to one Sunday a year for opening the deer season.

It's a tough sell in a state where voters in 41 of the 55 counties defeated Sunday hunting four years ago.

So far there is no legislation written, but the measure could end up on the floor of the Legislature.
