WIND STORM SWEEPS ACROSS COUNTY

A wind storm quickly swept across Calhoun and the region about 7 p.m. Wednesday, downing power lines and trees.

The Hur Herald wind gage recorded a few gusts 30-40 miles per hour.

A few areas in Calhoun are without power, including areas along Rt. 5 west toward Big Bend.

The Arnoldsburg VFD responded to an electric pole fire near the Millstone Church of Christ on Rt. 16.

The department responded to numerous reports of trees blocking the road, the mouth of Crummies Creek and Letherbark.

The Grantsville VFD responded to a tree across the highway near the Pleasant Hill Elementary School, Rt. 16 north.

Other reports from Hur, Yellow Creek, Annamoriah and Russett Road.

Regionally, it appears that thousands of electric customers are without service.

The storm moved through McDowell County, resulting in at least one death.

In the town of Davy, a gymnasium collapsed from the high winds at the Twin Branch Pentecostal Christian Academy.

Dispatchers are reporting that one person is dead. That person remains unidentified at this time.

Information gathered from emergency services said a funeral or wake was being held in the gym when it collapsed.
