OHIO REPORTS MORE PEANUT BUTTER SALMONELLA CASES

(02/11/2009)
Ohio continues to record new salmonella cases from the nationwide outbreak linked to peanut butter.

A Georgia company knowingly shipped tainted peanut butter products twelve times, according to US government investigators.

The State Department of Health said Tuesday that 89 cases have been reported in Ohio, with patients reporting the onset of symptoms as recently as January 24.

Twenty-nine cases have resulted in hospitalization, and officials say a salmonella infection may have contributed to at least one Ohio death.

Ohio remains the state with the largest number of cases, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and prevention.

Nationwide, 600 people have reported being infected and several have died, but there are indications that many others have suffered from ingesting the product.
