Calhoun placed three players in double figures en route to a 62-53 victory over visiting Clay County Wednesday night.
Zach Moore led the Red Devils with 26 points and he was aided by Justin Gerwig with 16 and Chucky Kendall with 14 as the Red Devils improved to 3-10 on the season.
Despite those three scoring all but six of the team's points it was very much a team affair as many other guys did their jobs.
For instance:
- Kyle Keesler scored but one point but he had a game-high four assists and might have had more had the Red Devils not missed a lot of close-in shots in the first half.
- Cai Clothier scored but one point but he more than held his own against Clay County's 6-7 Breken Gray before fouling out.
- Harold McCumbers came off the bench to net a three-point basket while playing excellent defense.
- Anthony Richards filled in for Clothier and was able to keep the ball from getting in to Gray.
- Tyler Bennett, who had seven steals in the junior varsity game, had a steal and a point in the varsity game while playing solid defense.
- Daniel Sims did not score but contributed with his defense.
Overall Calhoun rarely trailed in the game and on a couple of occasions appeared to be on the brink of blowing Clay out.
The Red Devils led 14-10 at the end of the first period and pushed it out to 27-15 at the half.
But then Clay started chipping away behind the three-point shooting of Jeremy Schwartz and the inside play of Sean Duffield. Schwartz had nine in the third quarter with a trio of treys while Duffield added seven as the Panthers closed to within five - 40-35 - at the end of three.
Clay continued to chisel into the lead and got it down to two on one occasion before the Red Devils behind the scoring of Moore regained momentum to pull away down the stretch.
One thing that really helped the Red Devils was the ability to beat the taller Panthers on the boards as they enjoyed a 39-24 advantage with Moore leading the way with 16. He was backed by Gerwig with nine and Kendall with six, the same number as Clay's leading rebounder Gray.
Clay, now 5-7, was led by Duffield with 14 while Gray added 11.
Clay won the junior varsity game by a 51-41 count but the victory didn't come without a struggle before the much bigger Panthers put it away.
Calhoun was led by Bennett with 12 points while Sims added 11. Brandon Sampson chipped in with eight and Richards added six. "Double Oh Joe" Overbaugh and CJ Myers rounded out the scoring with two each while Greg Myers, Stewart Fitzwater, Quentin "Q Dawg" Murphy and Noah Sweeney all played but did not score.
Clay County was led by Nathan Pritt's game high 18.
Calhoun returns to action at home tonight with a doubleheader against South Harrison.
