The SCHIP program will help West Virginia children, particularly since the state has among the highest rates of children living in poverty in America.
President Barack Obama signed the bill yesterday, approved by Congress, that will continue coverage for more than 35,000 children in West Virginia and extend coverage to an additional 19,000 children who are already eligible but not enrolled in the program.
SCHIP provides health care coverage to children in families whose income is too low to afford their own insurance but too high to be eligible for Medicaid.
"Authorizing the Children's Health Insurance Program, we fulfill one of the highest responsibilities that we have, to ensure the health and well-being of our nation's children," said Obama.
"It's a responsibility that's only grown more urgent as our economic crisis deepens, as health care costs have exploded and millions of families are unable to afford health insurance," he said.
"I'm pleased to see the President sign this important legislation into law," said Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito.
"This program helps ensure that thousands of low-income West Virginia children have access to quality healthcare," Capito said.
