RECESSION WATCH: Ritchie County's Simonton Windows Will Lay-Off 115 Employees, Circuit City Closing, WV Casino Laying-Off 175, Ogden Newspapers Reducing

(01/17/2009)
About 115 Simonton Windows employees will reportedly be furloughed at the Ritchie County plant, according to corporate officials.

A number of Calhoun workers will be affected.

Simonton says the layoffs are attributed to the downturn in the U.S. housing market and an anticipated seasonal drop in manufacturing.

The company is hoping to rehire the workers when the economy improves or seasonal business picks up.

The date for the layoffs has not been announced.

CIRCUIT CITY CLOSING NATIONWIDE

Thousands of Circuit City employees are out of a job.

The electronics giant is getting ready to close all its US stores.

Circuit City says the company has reached an agreement with liquidators to sell the merchandise in all 567 U.S. stores.

More than 30,000 employees are being terminated.

Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort at Chester is laying off 175 workers, or nearly 9 percent of its work force.

President and General Manager Jack Sours announced the cuts Friday.

It affects both salaried and hourly workers.

Sours blames the worsening economy and growing competition from slot parlors in Pennsylvania.

Mountaineer will now have 1,900 employees.

It's the largest private-sector employer in Hancock County.

The casino laid off 93 workers in November.

ODGEN NEWSPAPERS CUTTING BACK
