For the first time in a long time there was singing on the bus ride back home from an away game.
Friday night Calhoun went on the road to Wahama and came away with a 71-63 victory.
It was the Red Devils' first road win since the 2005-06 season and it came against a team that had crushed them the year before leaving the starters in until the end in a 107-42 crushing.
The Red Devils' revenge win wasn't as lopsided but it was very convincing for a team that just the night before had ended a 31-game losing streak when they beat Roane County.
Calhoun led just about the entire game and survived 13 three-point field goals by the White Falcons and a plethora of close calls going against it.
The Red Devils jumped to an early lead in a back-and-forth first quarter before going on top by one, 14-13. Calhoun improved its lead to six at intermission with a 26-21 advantage in the second quarter that saw it withstand the start of the three-point bombardment by the White Falcons.
Wahama actually tied the game up in the third quarter before Calhoun's defense started taking away the open three-point shot. After that Calhoun regained the lead and never looked back.
Zach Moore led the 2-7 Red Devils with 25 points and 17 rebounds to go along with his four assists.
But he was not alone in the scoring column as Justin Gerwig had a season-high 18 (with nine rebounds) and Chucky Kendall also rang up a season high with 11 points.
It was the first time all season that Calhoun had three players in double figures and it was the highest scoring total for the Red Devils this year too.
Kyle Keesler led the floor show and added seven points and four assists while Cai Clothier added five, Danny Slider four and Harold McCumbers one.
For Wahama, 1-5, William Zuspan led the way with 23 points, including seven three-point goals. Kyle Zerkle added 20, with two three-point goals while Kyle Whitlach had 11, with three three-point goals.
One area the Red Devils dominated was the boards where they enjoyed a 39-18 rebounding edge with Gerwig getting nine and Slider five to back Moore's 17.
Wahama won the junior varsity game 56-38 despite a 15-point, five-rebound effort by Caleb Schoolcraft.
Anthony Richards backed Schoolcraft with a seven-point, eight-rebound game. Quentin "Q Dawg" Murphy had six points and Brandon Sampson had five points and a team-high nine rebounds. Tyler Bennett, Daniel Sims and Greg Myers all had two and CJ Myers one for Calhoun. Noah Sweeney played but did not score.
Calhoun returns to action Thursday night when it entertains Gilmer County. |
