Calhoun County Schools WESTEST annual assessment results were received in September.

Schools distributed individual student results in October to parents. These results rate student mastery in content areas of Reading Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies for grades 3-8 and 10 (grade 10 does not test for social studies).

Schools analyze these results to identify areas of needed improvement.

West Virginia schools are measured for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) by WESTEST results in Reading Language Arts and Mathematics.

The state has set a percent of students' proficient for schools to meet to be classified as meeting AYP as it relates to WESTEST results.

Calhoun County's elementary schools reached the state's standards in all areas.

The middle/high school met the percent proficient when evaluated by the results of all students; however, it failed to reach the mark in the subgroup for low socio-economic students in Reading Language Arts.

All schools in Calhoun County continuously work toward improvement.

Schools analyze results in various ways ranging from school results to individual student results.

Areas of staff development are determined from school results. Calhoun County staff was provided training sessions in: WESTEST Analysis, Kansas Writing, Writing in the Content Areas, Standards Based Math, Accommodations/Inclusion, Various Instructional Strategies and Differentiated Learning.

Individual student results are analyzed and the results are incorporated into classroom instruction. Classroom interventions are altered to meet individual student needs.

Benchmark testing is being integrated into our curriculum to assess student's progress throughout the school year. Teachers will make academic adjustments to instruction as needed based on testing results.

Calhoun County Schools continue to improve the system of learning so that the level of education provided to our students is competitive with others in the state.

We solicit the support of parents and members of the community in which these students live and work so that the mission of Calhoun County Schools can be achieved.

"The staff of Calhoun County Schools in cooperation with the parents and community shall ensure a high quality education to enable students to become literate, self-sufficient, and life-long learners who contribute positively to society."
