The wheels fell off Calhoun's wagon in the second quarter and following that the Red Devils were unable to pt things right en route to a 53-37 setback at the hands of Parkersburg Catholic Tuesday night at Mount Zion.
Calhoun had held the Crusaders to four first quarter points and appeared on its way to getting its first win of the season ⦠unfortunately it did not happen that way.
Instead what happened was the Red Devils missed shots, made turnovers and watched as PCHS outscored them 21-8 to build a lead that it would never relinquish.
In that quarter the only Red Devil to score was Zach Moore who had eight of his game high 19 as the Red Devils complicated things further by having half (nine) of their 18 turnovers.
That quarter allowed PCHS to shoot out to a 10-point halftime lead, 25-15, and set the tempo of the game the rest of the way despite a couple of Calhoun rallies that cut the margin to single digits.
The Red Devils did several things right, out rebounding the Crusaders 25-22 for one things while hitting on 74 per cent of their free throws. But those things were negated by some things that weren't done so well such as 18 turnovers (to 13 for PCHS) while shooting a mere 13 of 36 from the field for a paltry 36 per cent from the field.
Moore was the only Red Devil to hit in double figures with his game high 19 and he narrowly missed a double-double when he led the team with nine rebounds, the same as Justin Gerwig.
Gerwig and Chucky Kendall added eight points apiece for the 0-3 Red Devils while Kyle Keelser had two points and four assists.
Cai Clothier, Danny Slider, Anthony Richards, Greg Myers, Harold McCumbers and Tyler Bennett all played but did not score.
For PCHS, now 2-0, Jason Williams led the way with 16 points while Cole Cwynar added 15. Sophomore John Padden added nine points along with five rebounds and five assists for the Crusaders.
Parkersburg Catholic won the junior varsity game by a 70-30 count behind a big strong front line. The Crusaders were led by Zack Romine with 13 points while 6-5 Nick Fisher added a dozen points and 11 rebounds in two quarters of play. David Garvin also had 12 points for PCHS.
For Calhoun Brandon Sampson led the way with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Caleb Schoolcraft added six, Joe Overbaugh five and CJ Myers and Stewart Fitzwater three each. Quinton Murphy, Noah Sweeney, Tyler Bennett and Harold McCumbers all played but did not score for the 0-3 Red Devils.
Calhoun goes after its first win of the season Friday against Clarksburg Notre Dame in the first round of the Notre Dame Holiday Classic. The Red Devils will play either Williamstown or Webster County on Saturday depending on the outcome of Friday's game.
