ROANE MAN WILL STAND TRIAL FOR DAMAGING VET'S MEMORIAL

(12/11/2008)
A Roane County man's trial has been set for April, accused of damaging the West Virginia Veterans Memorial with his car in March, 2007.

Howard Roland Gentry pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Kanawha County Circuit Court to a felony destruction of property charge to the monument located at the capitol complex.

Gentry's lawyer said the 60-year-old Newton resident was suffering from an unspecified medical condition when his two-door sports coupe scraped between the memorial's curved granite monoliths.

State officials have said repairs could cost up to $500,000.

Police at the time said Gentry also allegedly tried to drive his car up the steps of the Cultural Center.
