BUDGET CUTS HIT GLENVILLE STATE - Enrollment Not Growing

(12/21/2001)
Declining enrollment has caused a second budget cutback at Glenville State College. Several jobs will be eliminated to trim the $225,000 shortfall, according to newspaper accounts.

John Farmer, the new public relations director who was hired for $37.500, did not return phone calls made to clarify the problems. Last year the budget cut was about $532,000.

Hard-hit were three campus public safety officers, whose salaries apparently were lowered, all being re-classified as "security guards." One reportedly has resigned to seek other employment. The cut appeared to be from about $30,000 to an entry level position of $16,000.

Numerous other positions will be trimmed and others will not be filled. The college has asked over-all budgets to be trimmed to make up $45,000. School officials have said the budget problems came about because of un-funded mandates for salary increases, a nearly $10,000 increase in insurance costs to the Board of Risk and no increased enrollment.
