Calhoun sent two runners to the state cross country meet because of their strong showing in the Class AA-A Region IV run at Camp Virgil Tait Thursday afternoon.
Senior Anna Sampson, making a return visit to the state meet, finished second overall in the girls division of the race. Sampson had a time of 22:32 to finish second behind Ally Hoyer of Charleston Catholic.
In the boys race Justin Gerwig had an 18:56 to take 8th place overall while leading the Red Devils to a fourth place finish as a team.
The Red Devils also had a strong showing from senior Josh Parsons, who had a 20:34 for 18th place while Zach Hanshaw was 20th at 20:42. Cai Clothier, with a time of 22:40 was 25th while Anthony Richards was 29th with a time of 25:29.
In the girls race the Red Devils Maria Kisner was 25th with a time of 32:07 while Athena Wagoner was 28th with a time of 33:41 and Carrie Graffius was 29th with a time of 42:04.
Calhoun ran without Tracy King and Rochelle Gerwig who were unable to participate because of illness and other commitments.
The state tournament is scheduled for Nov. 1 at Cabell-Midland High School.
