A Clay County soldier killed in Afghanistan in 2008 will be added to a memorial plaque at the West Virginia Capitol.

The plaque currently contains the names of 35 soldiers with ties to West Virginia who have been killed in duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Being honored is Sgt. 1st Class Jamie Scott Nicholas, who was killed in action on Sept. 29, 2008, in Yakhchal, Afghanistan.

Nicholas joined the military after graduating from Clay County High School. He was 32 when he was killed.

Nicholas' funeral was held in the Clay County High School, with burial at Wallback.

Patriot Guard motorcycle members came to Clay to participate in the funeral.

Nicholas, who has a number of relatives in Calhoun, was killed in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb hit his Humvee.

Over 500 family members and friends gathered for a memorial on the steps of the Clay County courthouse.

"When one of us needs help, we all try to help, and when one of us has a loss, we all feel that sorrow, just like we're family, and we're all sharing our sorrow with the Nicholas family this evening," said Rozella Stover, a former high school teacher of Nicholas.

"We thank thee ..."
