GERWIG 11TH, SAMPSON 16TH AT INSURANCE CLASSIC

In a meet dominated by Class AAA Parkersburg South Calhoun's cross country team had some individual highlights as Justin Gerwig took 11th place and Anna Sampson 16th place in the West Virginia Insurance Classic Saturday at North Bend State Park.

While South swept both the boys and girls race titles Calhoun's boys team took eighth and the girls team 10th.

Gerwig, a junior runner, led the way for the Red Devils in the boys' race as he ran the course in 19:01 a mere four seconds out of breaking into the top 10.

Zach Hanshaw was next for the Red Devils with a time of 20:12.00 and a 24th place finish. He was followed closely by Cai Clothier with a time of 20:12.73 in 25th place. Next was Josh Parsons with a time of 20:38 in 34th place. Next was Anthony Richards at 23:42 in 49th place.

Overall Calhoun had 143 points to finish 18 points behind host Ritchie County.

Calhoun's girls team had 265 points to finish well ahead of 11th place Lincoln High School.

Sampson led the Red Devils with a time of 22:39 for 16th.

She was followed by Rochelle Gerwig with a time of 30:39 in 59th place; Maria Kisner with a time of 30:49 in 60th place; Athena Wagoner with a time of 32:52 in 62nd place and Carrie Graffius with a time of 54:33 in 68th place.

Daniel Sims and Tracy King both did not compete Saturday.

In the middle school race Monica Heiney had a time of 18:50 for 53rd place on the girls side while William Baker had a time of 16:51 for 70th place on the boys side. David Overbay was 83rd with a time of 21:35.

Cody Parsons and Hunter Thomas did not compete Saturday.

Saturday's race marked the end of the regular season for the Red Devils who do not return to action on Oct. 16th when they run in the LKC Championships at St. Marys. Following that the Red Devils compete in the regional meet Oct. 23 at Camp Virgil Tait and winners from that race will advance to the state meet Nov. 1 at Ona.
