34,000 ELIGIBLE WV CITIZENS HAVE YET TO FILE FOR STIMULUS CHECK

(09/30/2008)
A stimulus check for $300 is waiting for 33,965 West Virginia seniors and veterans who have yet to apply.

All they need to do to get it is file a 1040A income tax return.

They must file by October 15.

In June the Herald reported 187 Calhoun residents had not filed, mostly people over 65.

In February, Congress passed legislation that guaranteed a one-time "economic stimulus" payment to more than 20 million low-income seniors, veterans and people with disabilities.

Most of the people who have not yet filed are not ordinarily required to file an income tax return.

Many may not have filed a tax return in many years and may not know about the one-time-only $300 payment.

There are easy-to-fill-out 1040A forms at www.BenefitsCheckUp.org or www.AARP.org/stimulus The site provides easy-to-understand instructions. A person can type the information onto the form and print out the completed form, then mail it to the address provided on the site.

A person must have at least $3,000 in income to qualify and cannot be claimed as a dependent on their children's income taxes.
