Williamstown is the top-ranked Class A football team in the state and Friday night at Mount Zion it showed Calhoun exactly why with a businesslike 37-7 victory over the Red Devils.
Williamstown scored the first time it had the ball. The second time Calhoun had the ball. And the second time Williamstown had the ball and the result of that was a 16-0 Yellowjackets' lead the Red Devils could not recover from.
The Yellowjackets massive front wall stopped Calhoun's offense and ground down the Red Devils' defense as the game went on making the outcome never in doubt.
Williamstown rolled to a 37-0 lead - the last touchdown coming on a pass interception for a touchdown - before calling of most of the dogs allowing Calhoun to finally get untracked.
Calhoun scored in the fourth quarter when Randy Fluharty ran it in from two yards out with 4:57 remaining in the game. The touchdown came following a long drive that saw the Red Devils mix the running of Fluharty with a strong passing game.
But until that point Williamstown set the tone. -
The first Williamstown touchdown came on a two-yard run by bullish fullback Matt Hendrickson. Joe Palm added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
The next two points came on a safety when the ball was snapped over Calhoun punter Darrenger Fluharty's head forcing the freshman to take the ball away from a Williamstown player to keep the 'Jackets from getting a cheap touchdown.
Williamstown took advantage of the short field - and some of Calhoun's 50 first quarter penalty yards - to go ahead 16-0 when Cameron Powell scored from five yards out.
Powell, who had 120 yards on 11 carries for the game, had a two yard run to make it 23-0 at the half.

Williamstown scored again on its first possession of the second half when quarterback Adam Kerns ran it in from a yard out. Kerns also passed for 100 yards for the 'Jackets hitting nine of 14 passes.
The 'Jackets' final touchdown came on a 40 yard pass interception by cornerback Lane Knost.
Following that Calhoun scored and then Williamstown ran in its second unit and the Devils moved the ball but was unable to get any additional points.
Fluharty led the Red Devils with 97 yards on 19 carries while catching two passes for 34 more yards.
Overall Calhoun quarterback Zach Moore was 9 of 19 for 119 yards while suffering one interception.
Despite the disparity in the score Calhoun's defense - playing without two senior starters - did quite well keeping Williamstown from getting any big plays except for a 57 yard run by Williamstown all-state candidate Powell. And on that play Powell was run down from behind by Calhoun's Fluharty.
Williamstown had 286 yards total offense to Calhoun's 277 but the 'Jackets economized on the yards and put points on the board while Calhoun had the yards without many points.
The Red Devils, now 3-2 on the season, will try to rebound and gets their playoff hopes on track again Friday night when it plays South Harrison in the homecoming game.
Williamstown, now 4-0, entertains St. Marys in a battle of unbeaten teams.
