Calhoun did what it had to do early and often and then it emptied the bench en route to a 41-14 victory over Doddridge Friday night in the home opener for the 3-0 Red Devils.
Calhoun scored the first time it had the ball on a three-yard run by Randy Fluharty, one of two touchdowns on the night for the junior tailback, to cap a long drive.
The Red Devils quickly added another touchdown - a two-yard burst by Jeremy Conley - following a Daniel Sims' fumble recovery deep in Doddridge territory.
Fluharty, who had 187 yards on only 13 carries, scored the extra points to make it 14-0.
Fluharty added another touchdown on a 29-yard gallop moments later to make it 20-0.
The Red Devils didn't waste any time and took a 27-0 lead on Conley's second touchdown of the night, this one from three yards out.
After a bizarre Doddridge touchdown on a pass that went through the Calhoun defender's hands into the hands of Bulldogs' receiver Landry Marrs, Calhoun then stuck the fork in before intermission.
Junior Calhoun quarterback Zach Moore first scored on a four-yard run to make it 34-6 then scored again on a 39-yard run to make it 41-6 at intermission.
In the second half the Red Devils played their second unit offense and mostly their second unit defense all the way, allowing Doddridge only to cut the margin by a touchdown on an 11-yard reception by Marrs.
The Red Devils were in command all the way with a withering ground game the kept the Bulldogs on their heels the entire night.
Calhoun's ground attack was so powerful it did not throw a pass. Overall Calhoun had 352 yard rushing on 40 carries.
Backing Fluharty for the Red Devils was Daniel Sims, who had 65 yards on 10 carries, Moore with 43 yards on three carries, Darrenger Fluharty with 32 yards on five carries and Conley with 26 yards on six carries.
For the most part Calhoun got rid of the penalty bug but still lost 45 yards to flags. The Red Devils also cut down on fumbles losing only one. They had six bobbles but a lot of them came in the second half when the second and third team offense was in the game.
The one area where Calhoun was vulnerable was on pass defense.
Although solid tackling kept the Bulldogs from breaking many big plays - the exception was a 63-yard pass from Curtis Anderson to Zachary Holden - Doddridge still gained 153 yards on 11 of 25 passing.
Calhoun did have an interception by Danny Slider on a short pass over the middle.
The Red Devils run defense was spectacular holding Doddridge to 28 yards rushing with most of that coming on two busted punt attempts. Tim Sutro led the defense with eight tackles.
Calhoun is idle until next Saturday night when it travels to Parkersburg to play the Parkersburg Catholic Crusaders in a 7:30 p.m. game at Stadium Field.
Doddridge, 1-2, will try for its second win of the season when it travels to Wirt.
