Rick Atkinson, III, Yeager Airport director, left, and Dr. Peter
B. Barr, president of Glenville State College, dug a few shovels of
dirt officially beginning a cooperative environmental effort to
reclaim land along the sides of a 1,000-foot runway extension
at the Charleston facility.
Glenville land resource students look on, soon replacing the pair
and continuing Friday's tree planting.
College officials approached Atkinson with the idea.
Atkinson told reporters Glenville's long-standing reputation in forestry
and land management makes the association an obviously good one.
The project is expected to be a long term effort to improve the visual
appearance and minimize erosion at the site.
Several Charleston area media attended Friday's
ceremonial announcement. Atkinson and Dr.
Barr took turns fielding reporters questions.
