A big crowd attended Saturday's 11th Annual Bluegrass Festival at Chloe, sponsored by the Upper West Fork Volunteer Fire Department.

Fire Chief Randy Perkins said "We had some really good bluegrass bands this year, and the weather went along."

Bluegrass is popular in Calhoun and most of West Virginia, with its roots in Irish, Scottish and English traditional music.

In bluegrass, as in jazz, each instrument takes a turn playing the melody and improvising around it, while the others revert to "backing."

Traditional bluegrass is typically based around acoustic stringed instruments, such as acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, and upright bass, with or without vocals.

Bluegrass artists created some unique sounds in the West Fork Valley during the festival, which concluded with a fireworks display.
