Calhoun County 4-H Camp was held June 8-13 at the Gilmer County Recreation Center in Glenville. There were 66 4-H campers and 22 adult counselors that followed "4-H Your Road to Success" the 2008 Calhoun County 4-H Camp Theme.

Camp opened on Sunday with registration at 2:00 P.M. and closed at 9:30 P.M. on Friday following closing council circle. Following registration, the campers met in opening assembly to review camp rules and procedures. Campers were divided into four tribes with tribal leaders announced at council circle on Sunday evening: Cherokee - Chief Zac Stump; Sagamores - Jordan Mace; Alex McCumbers Seneca - Chief Arla Lane; Sagamores - Ashley Houchin, Samantha Wilson Deleware - Chief Dana Thomas; Sagamores - Jessi Cosgrove, Ashley Conley Mingo - Chief Hannah Wilson; Sagamores - Meghan Chriswell; Jessica Wood.

Sunday afternoon activities included tribal meetings; cabin meetings; dinner, recreation, meditations, council circle and snack time. The daily schedule for Monday through Friday began with flag raising at 7:20 a.m. Following breakfast, campers participated in cabin clean up and attended three classes or crafts of their choosing. The daily schedule also included: morning assembly, lunch, afternoon assembly, tribal meetings, and free time; which most of the campers used to go swimming as the week of camp was the hottest of the year with temperatures averaging the low 90s. The day would conclude with flag lowering, dinner, recreation, mediations, council circle, snack and lights out in the cabins by 11:00 P.M. The WVU Mountaineer was a special guest for one morning assembly and other special guest/presenters included: Doc Bear, Phil Kisner and his horse "Shatawna"; Nancy Bremar, JJ Bremar, and Jacob McCumbers. Special events during the week included karaoke with Toby Wagoner; Swim meet and Party; Camp Dance with DJ Jeff Jones and History Hitting the Road with Dean Hardman.

Classes and Craft offerings included Ceramics, Newspaper, Charting, Air Rifle, Swimming, Country Crafts, Recreation, Rockets, Cross Stitch Name Tag, Crackle Painted Signs, Table Tennis, Fishing, Pet Pals, Outdoor Adventures, Origami, 1st Year Camper, Folk Dancing, Quilting, Pet Pals, and Embroidery.

On Friday evening, the traditional pin wearer's service was held. Samantha Wilson, Ryan Ellison, Ken Chriswell, and Nathan Watkins successful completed the 4-H charting class and received their charting pins.

The highlight of closing council circle is the announcement of tribal points and awarding of the Hs and Spirit of Camp. During camp week, the tribes compete against each other to obtain the most tribal points through various tasks such as bed check, honor check, meal line ups and other activities. This year the Mingo tribe came in first place, followed by Seneca, Cherokee, and Delaware. The Hs and Spirit are the highest camp honors given at closing council circle and are given to campers that have exemplified the characteristics of each respective H during the camp week. Chosen as Head H was Hannah Wilson, Heart H was Ashley Houchin, Hand H was Alex McCumbers and Health H was Samantha Wilson. Spirit of Camp was Zac Stump.

Serving as camp counselors were: Tammy Nichols, Kelli Zwoll, Jo Lynn Wilson, Crystal Brenneman, Sandy McCumbers, Samantha Cason, Betty Ellison, David Weaver, JJ Bremar, Phil Kisner, Jacob McCumbers, Tammy Jett, Lori Wilson, Caitlyn Weaver, Heather Weaver, Ernie Tingler, Kevin Cunningham, Nancy Bremar and Brandy Brabham. Camp Director was 4-H Extension Agent Curt Garretson and Program Director was Kelley Houchin. Extension Camping Instructors (formerly known as VCAs) were Amanda Moles and John Stenger.
