MANCHIN SAYS YEAR-ROUND SCHOOL SHOWS GREAT RESULTS

(07/22/2008)
Gov. Joe Manchin is encouraging state lawmakers to investigate year-round schooling.

Manchin says Piedmont Elementary in Charleston, a year-round school, shows great results.

The Governor said, "If year-round education better prepares children for the work force, it's something West Virginia should consider."

Students are given four three-week breaks a year, in typical year-round school systems, equivalent to current summer vacation.

Advocates say shorter breaks keep kids interested and improve behavior. They say it also gives families more options for vacation and cuts down on absenteeism.
