A coal industry-backed group spent nearly $2
million dollars lobbying in the first quarter, fighting congressional efforts to combat global warming.
The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity lobbied against climate change legislation that was blocked last week by Senate Republicans.
They argued that it would result in increased energy costs.
The legislation proposed mandatory reductions in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
The coalition's members include American Electric Power, coal mine operators Consol Energy and Arch Coal, Norfolk Southern, CSX, Duke Energy, First Energy Corporation and Southern Company.
The price tag of lobbying efforts against global warming initiatives by fossil fuel corporations is running into multi-millions of dollars.
