Eighth graders at Calhoun Middle School participated in a class called Roads to Success this year.
Roads to Success is dedicated to helping young adults discover their full potential through college and career planning.
A class project called the Community Makeover Challenge identified a need in the Calhoun community and created a proposal to address it.
A panel of judges from the community then chose a winner. The winning class received a check for $500 from Roads to Success to turn their ideas into reality.
The winning class chose to focus on helping animals. Representatives from Furr-y Friends Spay-Neuter Group
came to talk with the students about the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
The students chose to spend the money by donating a portion to Furr-y Friends and designing new coin collection cans and a water game that the group can use in fundraising.
Another portion of the money was spent on a shopping spree where students purchased pet food, leashes, collars, and kitty litter for the Roane County Animal Shelter.

Brittany Hupp, Bridgett Wilson, and Suzie Harris went to the Roane shelter for a tour of the facility, and donated all of the products they had purchased.
Organizers said the students did a great job.
Class members say "If you see any of the new Furr-y Friends collection jars, please donate to continue helping this local organization, and please remember to have your own pets spayed or neutered."
