CALHOUN'S 911 CENTER STRUCK BY LIGHTNING AGAIN

(06/04/2008)
Calhoun's 911 Center was struck by lightning about 1:30 a.m. today as severe thunderstorms have moved across the county for nearly 24 hours.

911 Director Gary Buchanan said the boards leading to the center's main transmitters went down after the strike.

The Center operated several hours without a radio system, using phone links to providers to dispatch.

The phone system remained operational.

Buchanan said the strike was on the center's large tower.

Service was restored by noon.

The center had a major strike last year, essentially melting most of the center's equipment.

"This was a minor strike, compared to than," said Buchanan.

Since then equipment has been installed to minimize the strikes.
