LANDOWNERS COULD BENEFIT FROM PRESERVATION PROGRAM

(05/30/2008)
The U.S Department of Agriculture is offering financial and technical help for West Virginia landowners who want to protect their wildlife habitat.

Applications for the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program are due June 20.

WHIP is a voluntary program aimed at supporting wildlife projects on privately owned land.

Projects can include creating areas for better water quality, or growing small game habitat or grasslands for songbirds.

The program also looks to protect threatened and endangered species, and to improve habitat for woodland species like wild turkey and ruffed grouse.

Last year, USDA approved plans for almost 11,000 acres owned by 90 people. That was $905,015 in cost-share payments.
