Issues regarding the hiring of a county Attendance Director/Assistant Principal and a person to be in charge of curriculum was a concern of the Calhoun Board of Education during last week's meeting.
The board voted to change the criteria for a position listed as Assistant Principal/Attendance Director.
The posting stated that the position would be hired pending funding and that the person must have certification to be an Attendance Director.
The issue has been contentious for several months at board meetings.
Board member Cynthia Dale moved to remove "pending funding" and add that the applicant be "working toward certification or certified" as an Attendance Director.
A board consensus said to wait until August to re-post the position following the retirement of Susan Carper.
Board member Joy Starcher made a motion to remove the hiring of David Derby as Director of School Improvement, the board agreed unanimously.
The superintendent received at least two other applicants for the curriculum position, including principal Carla Taylor, who was not recommend for the position.
Board member Cynthia Dale questioned why Taylor was not recommend for the position, with Superintendent Jane Lynch advising the board she did not meet the requirements during the interview process.
The system has been struggling to replace a Curriculum Director since the retirement of Greg Cartwright.
Board President Lee Evans has continued to emphasize the importance of hiring the position, in view of current problems within the system related to performance.
Superintendent Jane Lynch, school administrators and teachers have continued to work on weaknesses in the system which prompted a critical audit from state education officials.
The county school system is switching from block scheduling to 8-period scheduling when school re-opens in August.
