Glenville State College
Glenville State College will induct five individuals Saturday into its Athletic Hall of Fame, which was established in May 2001 through the generosity of the late Curtis Elam, a 1949 graduate.
This year's inductees are:
- Russell Porterfield a native of Webster Springs. Russell graduated from Glenville State Teachers College in 1939 lettering in basketball and football.
He competed for the legendary Coach Nate Rohrbough and led the Pioneers to their first WVIAC football title in 1937. Additionally he earned All Conference honors in football in 1938.
Russell went on to become a very successful high school football coach at Webster Springs High School where his record was 125-18. After relocating to Macclenny, Florida, he once again enjoyed much success in his coaching career, winning the State's high school basketball conference with 60 wins in a row and served as a high school principal for many years.
Russell, who is being inducted posthumously, received a Silver Star for bravery during WWII. Russell's widow, Mary Helen Smith '40 is deceased. Their sons, John Porterfield '69 and Steve Porterfield '75 will be accepting this recognition on his behalf.
- Bob Armstrong a native of Warren, OH. Bob graduated from Glenville State Teachers College in 1942 lettering in basketball. In his freshman year, Bob was sixth man on the team and the next three years a starter and team leader.
He competed for Coach Nate Rohrbough and was team co-captain during his junior and senior years. His team was Three Time First Team All Conference, twice competing at the national tournament in Kansas City, winning third place one year and second place the other.
Bob was Two Time All Conference in 1941 and 1942. Additionally, he was named All Tournament in 1942 and named to the 50th Anniversary (1924-1974) All Time All Conference WVIAC Team.
He received a MS degree from Kent State University, taught and coached in high schools for awhile then worked in the insurance business and owned a private business in real estate until his retirement in 1998.
Bob is a veteran of WWII and spent 18 months oversees in Counter Intelligence. Bob and his wife, Phyllis, reside in Jacksonville, Fl. They are parents of three daughters: Robyn Moronti, Pat Frank, and Leslie Post who live near them.
- Coach Earl "Whitey" Adolfson, a native of Belmont, WV and spent much of his young life in Weston. He "walked-on" with West Virginia University's football team in 1949 before transferring to West Virginia Institute of Technology where he started as center and linebacker from 1950-1953 and graduated in 1954.
"Whitey" received his Master of Science degree in Physical Education from West Virginia in 1962 then taught and coached in Lewis and Wirt County schools and at Southern High School in Oakland, MD before coming to GSC in 1966 as an instructor and assistant football coach.
He was defensive coordinator for the Pioneers from 1968-1974 and celebrated the 1973 team's NAIA Football National Championship Runner-Up honors. Additionally he was assistant basketball coach in 1966 and revived the College's wrestling program from 1968-1975. He was head football coach from 1975-1979 and continued teaching and served as assistant athletic director from 1980-1985.
After 30 years of teaching and coaching, he pursued a career with I.L. Morris Well Service until his retirement in 1993. Respected by his fellow coaches and student athletes, Whitey has been a loyal GSC advocate for over four decades.
He received the 1996 West Virginia Coaches Association's "Retired Coach of the Year" honors for his contributions to coaching and was often referred to as "the players coach". Now retired, he continues to be one of the Pioneer's biggest fans.
"Whitey" and his wife, Jean, who is deceased, are parents of daughters Tanya Barker '73 and Machelle "Shelly" Stalnaker '77; son, Greg Adolfson; and grandchildren, Daphne and Tyler Stalnaker and Brett Barker. Both son-in-laws, Charles "Chuck" Barker '79 and Lynn Stalnaker '80, played football for "Whitey" at Glenville State College.
- Steve "Reno" Gandee, a native of Clendenin. Steve graduated from Glenville State College in 1982, lettering in football and baseball. He received Honorable Mention All WVIAC in football during his senior year and was his team's captain.
"Reno" scored a total of 127 points for the Pioneers and compiled 698 yards and had 8 touchdown receptions on 40 pass catches in his career. Additionally he established a then school record 47 yard field goal.
Steve finished his four year baseball career with a winning pitching record and was captain of his baseball team in 1981 and 1982. While at GSC, "Reno" also served as a student representative on the Athletic Committee and was a Resident Assistant and Head Resident Assistant.
After completing his career at GSC, Steve remained at Glenville and was a Housing Director while serving as a graduate assistant football coach in 1982. After receiving his Masters Degree in Business Administration from WVU in 1985, he returned to his alma mater as a Visiting Instructor in the Division of Business and served as an assistant football coach.
Also in 1985, he completed the WVSSC mandated basketball officials training program which led him to his current 24 years of officiating basketball at the high school level and his 14th year at the WVIAC Level.
In 2001, Steve was selected as the National Federation Officials Association Boys Basketball Official of the Year for West Virginia. He currently is secretary/treasurer for the WVIAC Basketball Officials Association.
Steve received his Juris Doctorate in 1989 and has on occasion served as an adjunt professor at his alma mater, teaching among other subjects business law based on his experience as an attorney in West Virginia.
He currently serves as Chairman of the Department of Litigation for the statewide law firm of Robinson & McElwee, PLLC. Steve is married to the former Tamra "Tammy" Burkhamer '83 of Linn and they have two children, Stephenee and Andrew. The Gandees reside in Jane Lew.
- Carlos Ferralls a native of Miami, FL. Carlos graduated from Glenville State College in 1998 lettering in football. He was a three time WVIAC All Conference performer and a three time All American.
The 1998 official NCAA record book lists Carlos as being 4th in the nation in All Time Receptions per game with 10.1. During his playing career for the NCAA, Carlos was 1st in All Time Career Receptions per game with 268 and 4th in All Time Career Yards per game with 120.
In 1996 and 1997, he led the nation in receptions per game and in 1997, he led the nation in yards per game. He was awarded GSC's prestigious Montrose Award in 1998, his career stats being 268 receptions, 4101 yards, and 46 touchdowns.
After returning to his native Florida, he worked at the YMCA for two years "giving back" to the community before coaching football and teaching four years at Miami Senior High School. Carlos currently serves as Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Principal for Miami Dade County Public School System where he handles among other duties, curriculum and attendance.
He recently received a Masters Degree in Leadership and Administration and lists as his career goals to become a principal and later a superintendent. Carlos and his wife, Belkis Ferralls, reside in Coral Gables, FL.
The May 17th banquet and induction ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Alan B. Mollohan Campus Community Center on the campus of Glenville State College.
