Kenneth R. Carpenter, of Arnoldsburg, was the recipient of the Melissa Oshoway Criminal Justice Scholarship, awarded May 8, at Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center's awards ceremony.
He is the son of Kenneth and Linda Carpenter of Arnoldsburg.
Each year the $1000 scholarship is given to a Calhoun or Gilmer County student pursuing a career in the criminal justice field and currently attending the Career Center.
The Melissa Oshoway Criminal Justice Scholarship was formed in 2005 by friends and family and is in memory of Melissa "Missy" Oshoway, daughter of John and Sue Oshoway.
Missy was in a car accident on Christmas Eve 2004 and passed away on January 5, 2005. In an effort to see that this vibrant young lady's memory lives on, the Melissa Oshoway Criminal Justice Scholarship Fund was formed.
Missy was a hard worker and very dedicated to school. Those who met her described her as a ray of sunshine. "It is our hope that those who knew her will honor her memory by supporting her scholarship fund annually," said scholarship committee members.
In this special way, your gifts will continue to do what Missy loved to do - help others. This is a special tribute to her caring spirit and the funds will assist in the education of students dedicated to achieving their goals like Missy was.
The Oshoways would like to thank Grantsville First Baptist Church, Rue and Shiela Brannon, Carolyn Lane, Rick Modesitt, Janet Marks, Mort and Mary Beth Titus and Anita Ashley for their kind donations to this year's scholarship fund.
Past scholarship recipients are, 2005 Alecia Alcaraz-May, 2006 Brittany Weaver, 2007 Jacob Richards.
