FOREST FIRE RISK REMAINS HIGH - Nearly 32,000 Acres Burned

(11/10/2001)
Despite a small amount of rainfall, the risk of forest fires remains high, according to the Division of Forestry. National Guard troops, about 100, have been called again to fight numerous blazes in southern West Virginia. There was also a forest fire in Doddridge County.

Leslie Fitzwater of the Division of Forestry says some people are ignoring the ban on all outside burning by Governor Wise.

Since October 29, 240 fires have burned over nearly 32,000 acres, causing smoke to drift across much of West Virginia. Reports said that six fires were still burning Thursday night with more than 20 brought under control.
