Charges are expected to be filed in a Wirt shooting incident that was first reported on the Hur Herald.
Chris Giffin, 18, of Mineral Wells was shot in the head last October with a .22-caliber bullet while squirrel hunting near the Wood County line.
Giffin, a volunteer fireman with the Washington Bottom VFD and a senior at Parkersburg South High School, was reportedly shot in the head. He was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital by HealthNet.
Wirt Prosecutor Leslie Maze is telling media she is expecting to file charges related to the incident, which has been investigated by the West Virginia DNR.
Maze, when questioned about why it has taken so long, referred the questions to the DNR.
Maze told the Parkersburg News that authorities are investigating a
suspect who was a convicted felon at the time of the incident.
During the time the DNR was investigating the shooting, Wirt County Middle School Principal JD Hoover was suspended after he was charged with taking firearms onto school grounds.
Court records allege Hoover went and got the guns involved in the shooting at the request of a friend, bringing them back on school property.
The charges against Hoover have been dropped, after his attorney used a technical point of WV's law regarding weapons on school property, saying the rifles were unloaded and locked in a trunk.
Later, according to court reports, Hoover was asked by his friend to return the weapons to the scene of the shooting incident after police arrived on the scene, indicating he went back and placed the weapons near the site of the incident.
Officials have indicated the charges may be refiled against Hoover.
The DNR has said Hoover was not involved in the shooting.
A hearing on Hoover's status is scheduled by the Wirt County Board of Education at 6 p.m. April 16.<
Hoover was a former guidance counselor at Calhoun County High School. |
