STATE OF EMERGENCY IN WEST VIRGINIA FORESTS - Burn Ban Still In Effect

(11/02/2001)
A State of emergency was declared Tuesday by Governor Bob Wise because of an increasing number of forest fires in the state and continued warm and dry conditions. A spokesperson from the DNR said "The woods are a tinder box."

Wise declared all outdoor burning off-limits last Sunday.

Over 6000 acres have burned in the state as Wise activated 100 National Guardsmen to help fight the blazes, including ten from the 1092nd Engineers in Spencer. Wise toured forest fires in Mingo County.

A 30-percent chance of rain has been predicted for today (Friday).
